Vale Chris Leopold

It is with much sadness that we remember life member Chris Leopold, who passed away suddenly last Monday, 10th of October.  Chris had had heart surgery in July this year and we thought he’d made a full recovery.  His passing comes as a real shock to all members of the club.

Chris Leopold joined the club in 1974 in the U’19’s and played a total of 65 games till 1979. In his first season with the club he won the 3rd best & fairest as a ruckman in the junior team.

Chris left West Brunswick and joined St. Andrew’s, a new VAFA club based in Coburg. In a short time with that club he filled every role on their committee (Secretary, delegate, President). He was awarded life membership of St. Andrew’s around 1995.

Such was his passion for sport that Chris was also heavily involved for 30 years at St Andrew’s Cricket Club where he was also a life member.  When St Andrew’s Football Club folded in 1998, Chris returned to West Brunswick and in 2001 took up the role as goal umpire.

Chris volunteered to goal umpire both senior and reserves games, taking the pressure off the team manager to fill two vital roles on each Saturday.  Week-in, week-out, Chris was part of the furniture behind the goals. Chris had an influence on every player who played a game for West Brunswick during this time.

In 2002 Chris took on the job as ‘game day administrator’. He phoned the scores through to the VAFA, escorted the umpires on and off the ground, helped with ground inspection reports and minimised the fines the VAFA could impose on the club. All these things that needed doing so that we could play the game we love and represent West Brunswick: Chris made sure these things were done. Chris was involved in West Brunswick in this role, but so much more as well. He was with us on Saturday nights, often helping out selling raffle tickets, behind the bar, on the door and generally filling in spots that require accuracy, judgement and integrity.  He wanted nothing in return – he did this because he loved the club – and the club loved him.

Chris – thank you for everything you have done for West Brunswick Amateur Football Club. You will be missed by all.  You memory will live on in all those whose lives you’ve have touched.

Vale Chris Leopold

2012 Coaching Appointments

Dear all,

West Brunswick AFC is delighted to announce the appointment of Angus Hamilton and Matthew Drain as co-coaches for the 2012 Season.  Both Matthew and Angus have previously played with and been involved with the club.

Angus “Hamma” Hamilton joined WBAFC in 1995.  He played 120 games and is one of West Brunswick’s favourite sons. He was Captain of the club in 1998/1999, and in 2002/2003 was assistant coach (including involvement in the 2002 Premiership). In 2004-2006 Angus was the senior coach before heading off to the UK in November 2006.  Angus has kept in close contact and supported the club whilst in the UK. Indeed, Angus has played the role of a quasi-international recruitment scout with many current West Brunswick players having returned home from the UK and joined West Brunswick on Hamma’s recommendation.  It’s great to see Hamma returning to Park St.

Matthew “Drainy” Drain played at West Brunswick in 2003 and 2004.  Outside West Brunswick Drainy has held various positions through his sport science background. These include:

  • Essendon FC Football manager
  • Cricket Australia high performance manager,
  • Western Bulldogs Football Manager & high performance manger
  • St Kilda FC .  General Manager Football – List Management
  • Carlton Cricket club coach

Matthew’s experience will no doubt be invaluable to the our current list, and will be a major draw card for attracting new players to the club. We are extremely lucky to have secured someone of such high calibre as Drainy.

Matthew and Angus will be in touch with players shortly with plans for the pre-season however, should you have any queries, please contact Angus on 0402532217.

We welcome both coaches and look forward to a very successful year in 2012.
