Dear West Brunswick AFC community,

The WBAFC executive wishes to advise our players, members, and wider West Family that the Victorian Amateur Football Association has made the decision to further postpone the beginning of the 2020 season until May 31 at the earliest in light of the developments regarding COVID-19. All formal training, matches, and club events have been suspended until otherwise advised.

VAFA CEO Brett Connell has advised that the league is currently working through two possible scenarios for the 2020 season: a  re-fixtured, shortened season, or no season at all. This is obviously an unprecedented situation for the club, and we are currently working through a range of approaches to plan for both scenarios. We will continue to update you all as information becomes available, either from the VAFA or from the club.

Staying Connected

We know that West Brunswick means a lot to all our members and provides a welcoming home for each of us. It will be a difficult road ahead knowing that we will not be able to physically spend time together as a community. We will continue to stay connected and engaged throughout this time via our usual channels including team WhatsApps, club email, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as the club website.

Health and Wellbeing

With Stage 3 COVID-19 Restrictions announced for Victoria yesterday, we understand that this is a stressful and uncertain time for everyone, and that people may feel anxious and isolated. I continue to encourage you all to support each other at this time, as we support each other during any other season. We may be physically isolated, but we do not have to be alone. Please reach out and check in with one another, and stay connected to your communities while following the directive to stay home. Remember that we all have a role to play, not only our own health but to ensure the safety of those in the community.

The health and safety of our members is our number one priority, and this includes mental health and wellbeing. Our welfare team have put together some advice on self-care in response to the current situation, which can be found here. Please do not hesitate to reach out to the club leadership for support, or to contact any of our mental health first aid trained members.

If you, a friend, or a relative needs someone to talk to, or to access to further support or information, please visit our Mental Health Resources & Crisis Support page for details and contacts.

2020 Playing Fees:

There are a few key points to note regarding 2020 playing fees/subs:

  • As we do not have a complete understanding of how the season will look this year, all subs are currently on hold, including a complete pause on payment plans.
  • For those players who have already paid their subs for the 2020 season, these payments will be held until we have a better understanding of the season going forward.
  • However, should you find yourself in a changed financial position where you need to call upon the funds paid in advance, please contact WBAFC treasurer Jessica Roberts to arrange a refund.
  • As more information comes to light regarding the length of the season, we will provide an updated subs policy for 2020, including processes for complete or partial refunds of paid subs.

2020 Memberships:

I would like to start by thanking our 2019 Golden Magpies and player sponsors for their contribution. The support of our members are vital to the success of our club, on and off the field.

With a reduced season, and the possibility that we will not see any football this year, the club will be working through alternative membership options for 2020. More information will be distributed via our website, social media, and email in the coming weeks.

As this unprecedented situation develops, the WBAFC Committee will keep you updated and provide support wherever and however we can. In the meantime, we will also be working to maintain WBAFC as a community where people can find support and solace, as well as relief from the boredom of self-isolation.

It’s the people that make West Brunswick what it is, so stay safe, stay home (if you can) and look out for one another.
