Round 1 Summary – vs Glen Eira

The rewards of victory are sometimes greater than the four premiership points on offer. Yesterday our senior men’s team tasted success by the narrowest of margins against Glen Eira. A galvanising win for the whole club.
It was a match that started in 27°C heat with a strong northerly blowing toward the pavilion end, and ended in the midst of a heavy thunderstorm with sheeting rain and hail. Drama of the purest kind.
Up by 36 points at half time, we were looking to preserve our lead as Glen Eira had their chance with the wind in the third quarter. They scored and kept scoring as the clouds rolled in; the wind and temperature changed; and the rain pelted down. By three-quarter time our lead had been whittled down to 6 points.
In a stirring address at the final change, coach Angus Hamilton implored his players to dig deep, grind it out, and most importantly enjoy every last minute of the contest.

With three minutes to go, Glen Eira registered their third goal of the quarter to gain an eleven-point lead. The clock ticked over the thirty-one-minute mark and our co-captain Dave Ferrier dribbled through an unlikely goal from a pack of players in the forward pocket. Centre bounce. Possession of the ball constantly in dispute. Ninety seconds remained on the clock when our ruckman, Mitch Graham, found himself with the pill at centre half-forward. Finding himself in the clear, he launched the water-logged Sherrin miraculously through the big sticks. Players came from everywhere to rejoice in the big man’s living out of every kid’s footballing fantasy. The final minute of the game was a slog against the clock. The siren sounded with the ball in Glen Eira’s forward line, signalling a famous win for the West.
